I recently saw a TV programme looking at the changes, due in part to the emergence of new technologies about what makes a book. In today's tech world your choices are much greater, you don't just get a hardback, a paperback, or a brilliantly illustrated picturebook, instead you can now choose to read a book electronically. It doesn't stop there of course as you can view it as an App, to play with, or simply read it on a device, specially built to display books in a digital format and with print on demand you can even get a book printed in the time taken to drink a coffee!I'm thinking this is just the start, because as technology gets faster and slicker it could be that in the future you'll have even more choice in your digital books. Perhaps you'll be able to choose to have your story read out by a famous celebrity, decide whether you want the content to be from a first person, or third person viewpoint, change it into a graphic novel on the fly, or even change the ending to how you think it should finish!
Now don't get me wrong I love gadgets, I get excited by all the things they can do, even applaud all the whistles and bells that often come preinstalled on them, but sometimes all the pinging, dinging, ringing, button bushing and playing just gets in the way and I crave to be able to read a book and let my imagination do the work! Surely this can't be too much to ask, there's still plenty of fun to be had by just curling up with a good book and drifting so far into the story that everything around you just blurs into the background, now that's what I call a brilliant Christmas present!
