The book is set in a world where most of the trees have been destroyed so that wood is now worth more than gold. On one last densely-wooded island exist huge trees a mile high. This is where the hero of the story lives: Ark the plumber's boy.
The book opens with a dramatic chase through the high treetops as Ark finds himself on the run for his life after overhearing a plot to destroy his forest home.
